Website Primary Market FAQ

How do I better understand SEO and how traffic to my websites works?

FAQ | Primary Market

  • Why does the home page say, "Looking for new flooring in the 'Main City' Area?" When I service more than that city?
    • This field is our most robust opportunity on the site to generate leads. It is the home page's focus and, therefore, where google assigns the most value. We want to put a target here that is as close to your address as possible (ideally, the exact wording as the city you are in), as search results are heavily focused on location. It may be better to target something larger here if the dealer is in a city with a low population or the dealer is already completely dominating their city, and it's time to pick a broader target. We strongly advise against changing this field from what our SEO experts chose, as it could result in a missed opportunity for revenue for your business.
    • For dealers with multiple locations - we still suggest their main location/flagship store be in this field unless there is a good phrase encompassing all. This phrase must still have search volume and be a market they could be competitive in. (ex., If a dealer has two locations in the DFW area, it could still be tough to target DFW successfully.)
  • I am targeting large cities; why am I not getting much traffic to my site?
    • As I am sure you have experienced some competition in your area over the years, the same is happening in search results. There are a lot of searchers in large cities, and many businesses are trying to show up for those searches. We are fully confident in our offering's ability to perform in cities of any size, and it is usually just a matter of time. Please reach out to your account manager and discuss your options.
  • I just launched and am not getting the traffic I hoped for. Would changing my primary markets help my traffic right away?
    • When launching a new site, we set the expectation that it will take 3-6 months to start seeing significant organic traffic and leads. It takes time to establish authority in SEO, but it is one of the most effective forms of marketing in the long term. Changing primary markets in the ramp-up period is one of the worst things we can do for performance. The new markets, in theory, would take the same amount of time to gain the same amount of authority, and we would start to lose authority from the previous markets. Patience is the name of the game.
  • How do you choose which primary markets are best?
    • We choose our suggested targets based on SEO best practices. Google recommends only choosing targets within 2 hours of your store, and we abide by this, but it is often the absolute max. For example, if your store is in a rural area, it may make sense to target the largest cities in a 2-hour radius. Still, if your store is in San Diego, it would be almost impossible to successfully target Los Angeles, even though it is technically within a 2-hour drive. We will consider multiple factors like this and determine the markets we feel your business will be most successful.
